Isle of Sylt

Kevin kept telling me about this place, Sylt, that he'd wanted to visit for the last 10 years. It was on the way to Herning, Denmark, where we had a show on Monday. Since we had Sunday free, we decided to get the early train to Sylt, have the day there, then get the train to Flensburg, which was just on the German/Danish border. We would carry on to Herning the day of the show.

Leaving Hamburg                                Hammers!                                         The outskirts of some German town

Well, that's more or less what we did--it's 7:30 P.M. Sunday, and I'm typing this on the train--so the only thing we didn't do was leave early! We took the 11:20 train from Hamburg and arrived in Sylt around 2:30.

Crossing over to the island                                The most used transport on Sylt                 Proof that Kevin's been!

I had an e-mail this morning from Guntmar, who I'd met the night before at the show, and he said that if we were going to Sylt not to miss visiting the Kupferkanne Cafe. Its a very famous cafe among Germans and worth going to see. I looked at the map, and it was about five miles north of Westerland--the train station where we arrived. Kevin was up for it--I was definitely up for it! I Googled it earlier in the day, and it said, “We serve giant cups of coffee and huge slices of cake--including scrumptious plum cake.” Another done deal!

The art outside Westerland station.             Upside down head!         Even the lamp posts were art!

We asked the lady in the tourist information booth outside the station where the best places to see were if we only had three or four hours to visit. The train to Flensburg left at 5:20 or 7:20, and we planned on taking the later one. She pointed us in the direction of the promenade and told us to walk north. We also asked about the Kupferkanne Cafe in Kampen, and she marked it on the map for us. It's about 7.5 kilometres, she said, and the bus goes from right outside the station and takes about 15 minutes. We thanked her, took the map, and started walking towards the promenade.

The shopping area of Westerland:

We passed a few ice cream places--we walked past one just as the waiter was bringing out some HUGE ice cream creations to customers sat outside. Kevin and I looked at each other, then looked for a table. Unfortunately there were none outside, and it was too warm to eat inside, so we were safe from ourselves for a little while longer :)

DSCF1911 (Large)  DSCF1912 (Large)

We passed a couple of places that had these strange seats-in-a-basket constructions. Kevin mentioned these were popular here, and we’d see lots of them on the beach. I suggested to Kevin that we take the bus to the cafe, then walk back to work off the cake and other delicious food! He suggested we walk TO the cafe, then get the bus back. That was good with me--I was up for a long walk, for sure! We passed a few places that rented bikes, and I asked Kevin if he wanted to rent one, but he was pleased with walking. We headed to the beach, and, after reluctantly paying 3.50 Euros to enter, (Come on! Kevin NEVER pays full price for tickets!) we headed down to the promenade and started walking north.

DSCF1913 (Large)  DSCF1915 (Large)  DSCF1917 (Large)

Kevin was right--the basket things were everywhere! They were on the promenade and on the beach--facing every direction so people could catch the sun or the shade. They also moved up and down--this enabled you to fully recline.

Seaside band

We walked north until we came to the end of the boardwalk, then we had to walk on the sand. I took my shoes and socks off and headed down the beach. The sand was some of the softest white sand I've ever felt, and I've seen very soft sand in Hawaii, but this was not just soft, but clean! This is something we both commented on when we arrived--the whole place was spotlessly clean! Just before we got on the beach, my blackberry maps app said 4.5 miles and 55 minutes to Kampen, where the cafe was. As we started walking on the sand, I told Kevin that walking on the beach probably added another hour to that 55 minutes. Little did we know how right I would be!

Kevin walked on the sand nearer the sea, so it was a bit easier. I was happy feeling the soft white grains in my toes, but and struggled a little--I hadn't worked out for weeks, and this was hard work--but great! Minutes later, I looked around, and there were naked people! Not just topless people, but naked--FULLY naked!! There were bits dangling down all over the place! I put my sunglasses on, hung my head towards the ground, and started walking as fast as I could. "Oops! Excuse me!" I said as I nearly walked right into a lady with everything pointing south! I finally saw a sign I presumed signaled the end of the nude beach--phew! That was close! I was hot and sweaty, and it wasn't from the sun!

Plane landing over the beach

Plane landing

Kevin was struggling after a while too, and we took a rest in one of the basket seats for a minute. We carried on and headed to the next exit off the beach, so we could walk the remainder of the journey on the road. What we actually did, though, was manage to get on the walking/cycling path, and it went on and on winding for miles--this way, that way, then back this way, and all we had walked was about 50 feet forward! It was worse that walking on the sand! What was cool, though, was the houses and the area. It was beautiful, and a lot of the houses had thatched roofs--something that isn't seen a lot in the UK and usually only on older houses--these looked to be brand new properties!

We kept following the signs and wound our way left, right, then left and back right on the scenic bike path.

We constantly joked that it would be just around the next corner, then the next, then the next. Eventually we asked someone the way to Kampen--we knew we were heading in the right direction, but just wanted some reassurance. A local said we were fine, just to keep heading up the path.

Follow the rabbit!

We walked past fields of pick-your-own strawberries and potatoes. We passed some beautiful houses--I couldn't even begin to imagine how much they cost. We kept walking and walking, and when we saw a few houses up front, we finally passed a sign saying, "Welcome to Kampen!" We were there!!

DSCF1940 (Large)  DSCF1941 (Large)  DSCF1950 (Large)  DSCF1956 (Large)   DSCF1939 (Large)  DSCF1957 (Large)

Then the strangest thing happened--I can't really explain--you had to be there to see it--but imagine this; we walked three miles along this bike path with nothing but fields, trees, the odd thatched cottage, and a few nice houses. When we turned right onto a street, the first thing I saw was in the picture below:

DSCF1958 (Large)

I saw three Porsches and a Ferrari California!! It was bizarre, but the further down the street we walked, the more we saw--an old Aston Martin DB7 convertible passed us, as did a Porsche 959, then a couple of the Mercedes G wagons, then parked up were three more Ferraris! This wasn't a car show or anything like that--it was just a street with three or four restaurants and bars. These places were packed to the brim with the type of people that would drive such cars!! We still had no idea where the cafe was, and we took to asking a guy on the end of the street who was perched taking pictures of all the cars driving around. "Ah yes," he said, "It's about 200 metres down that way on your right-hand side!"

Bvlgari store!                                           Louis Vuitton store           Thatched roofed Vuitton store!

DSCF2023 (Large) DSCF1959 (Large) DSCF1960 (Large)

Neither of us could believe it--it was like a mini Beverly Hills right in the middle of nowhere! The cars, the people, the stores, the restaurants--it was so strange just to stumble upon it all.

Kampen

Kevin and I followed the road--it just looked like a country lane. In fact, it WAS a country lane just winding its way around some gorgeous country houses that looked a lot like quaint English cottages.

DSCF1975 (Large)  DSCF1972 (Large)  DSCF1973 (Large)

We walked and walked, and after walking 200 metres like the guy told us, then another 200 metres, we asked a lady out walking her dog if she knew where Kupferkanne was. “Ahhh, just down the road, and turn right by the blue sign.” So again we walked down 300 metres or so, then turned right onto yet another country lane.

By this time Kevin and I were joking that maybe there was no such place as the Kupferkanne Cafe--maybe it's the Germans inside joke, and ALL Germans know that if anyone ever asks them where the Kupferkanne Cafe is, just tell them it's down there and turn right!!

We also passed a couple of strange houses with grass on the roofs! I guess mowing the lawn could be a bit dangerous! Then, finally, there was a sign for the Cafe!!!

DSCF1979 (Large)  DSCF1980 (Large)  DSCF1976 (Large)

We also saw a strange sculpture in the middle of a field. It was in the middle of nowhere!

DSCF1969 (Large)  DSCF1970 (Large)

We followed the arrow on the rock until there was finally some sort of activity in the distance! All along the road we hadn't seen a single person--when we walked into an opening between the trees, there were hundreds of peddle bikes, Ferraris, Mercedes and Porsches all parked up!

We're here!                                          Yes, that's a McLaren SLR!!!                JUST a Ferrari

DSCF1981 (Large)   DSCF2013 (Large)   DSCF2012 (Large)

Kevin and I walked up to the outside area of the cafe, and it looked amazing. It was just like something out of Alice in Wonderland!! The inside was just as cool as the outside, with bare-faced rock walls brought inside to sit around

DSCF1987 (Large)  DSCF1988 (Large)   DSCF1983 (Large)

I waited outside while Kevin went to the bathroom, and I started drooling when I saw the waitress carrying the largest pieces of cream covered cake I've ever seen along with huge cups filled with hot chocolate and coffee!

DSCF1993 (Large)  DSCF1991 (Large)  DSCF1992 (Large)

We took a table to the side in the shade where we had a nice view of the sea through the trees. We sat and watched the other tables. We both ordered the rhubarb cake with cream, a coffee for Kevin, and a hot chocolate for me.

DSCF1997 (Large) DSCF1998 (Large) DSCF2001 (Large) DSCF2002 (Large)

The cake was amazing, and the hot chocolate was good (but not as good as the stuff I had in Barcelona.) The view was spectacular,--it couldn't have been better. I was surprised that it wasn't too expensive either--3.50 Euros for a piece of cake the size of the island of Sylt!

We took a quick walk after we finished--the place was huge--it went on for ages with tables and chairs tucked over every bush. It had some amazing views of the sea and the countryside around it. I could have sat there for hours with the birds whistling, the waves crashing, the clinking of peoples spoons in cups and forks on plates--it was divine! Time was getting on, however, and much to my disappointment, (yeah right) Kevin wanted to get the bus and not walk the six miles and two hours back to the train station!

Our view at the cafe

We got to the stop and jumped on the bus 15 minutes later--not before seeing the car of all cars though! Just as we got on the bus, there was a Buggati Veyron on the other side of the street! Not just any Veyron, though, but a convertible version painted in satin black. I'm sure the guy driving it could look around at all the other cars and think, "Game, set, and match!"

Hamburg show 2…

Didn't do much sightseeing today, in fact i didn't do any at all! After the show last night i went straight to bed  while Kevin and a few others went to the bar across from the hotel. I vaguely remember Kevin coming in the room around 2am but next thing i knew it was 9am. I managed to get back to seep for a couple of hours before getting up and heading out for breakfast in a local bar.

We headed out to the venue around 5pm, took the 20 minute train and then the 15 minute walk to the venue. Met a nice guy who’d travelled from Turkey from the show on the platform and we chatted and walked with him all the way to the venue.

Met up with Thomas, Dennis and his friend, Matt from Guildford and Berto and Elzira.

Berto and Elzira had started their tour 5 weeks ago in London, they had seen all the shows since (20 in total) and tonight was their last show. I could tell there was sadness in their eyes and Kevin told me later on that Elzira was even thinking of staying out for another 5 weeks and going home after Athens! However i don't think that happened and they will be on the plane home to Sau Paulo as I'm typing this, they are both such lovely people and i really hope i get chance to see some of the South American shows next March and take up their offer of a place to stay!

It was quiet outside the venue when we arrived so Kevin and i headed up to the bar in the football stadium next door for 20 minutes with Matt before coming back down and mingling with the crowd. Last night i had one or two people recognise me from the blog and come up and say hi, they were all asking where Kami was! Tonight was the same, i had a couple of people come up who had both been reading the blog since they found it on some Pink Floyd forum last year and a couple whom had found it recently while reading  Rogers Facebook page.

Kevin (and my) friend Ralph arrived around 6:30pm, I hadn't seen Ralph since the Dark Side tour, Kevin, myself and Ralph had done a few shows around Germany and had a great time hanging out and drinking together. It was Ralphs 1st show tonight and i was excited to see what he thought of it especially as Ralph is a musician and a serious German one at that!

I headed in the venue around 7:15, i was 2nd row right in front of “The Big C” , Harry and the backing singers tonight, Elzira and Berto were front row in front of me and Matt was 2nd row sat next to me to the left and Pete and his wife from Switzerland were to my right.

I love the buzz before the shows, everyone milling around, taking pictures chatting to each other. I spotted Nicoli and Adrianna waving to me from their seats on the right side of the stage, they were very happy with the tickets Kevin sorted out for them. Also had a chat to Nicoli and Adrianna who i’d seen earlier outside, they had the best seats in the house tonight, front row dead centre. This was their 10th show and we would meet up again maybe in Athens.

Show started around 8:10 tonight, i could tell from the start the crowd were going to be better than they were last night for some unknown reason! I've only been in this seat position for a couple of shows and this was early on in the tour in the USA. Its not my favourite seat to be honest, i much prefer Dave K’s side however it was cool to  watch the backing singers and see just how much they do do apart from sing! I watched as they did some great vocal harmonies during The Thin Ice, normally I'm watching Roger on bass and take little notice of what anyone else is doing but tonight was a little different (in a good way)

 DSCF1764 (Large)  DSCF1762 (Large) DSCF1763 (Large)

Backing singers during Another Brick

The crowd cheered loudly for the first time as the Mercedes symbols tumbled down from the B52 bomber planes, and i also heard and saw Dave playing some nice little harmonics at the end of Goodbye Blue Sky, something which again I've either not noticed or haven't been there before!

Roger playing bass

I also had a great view of Robbie too through the open bricks half way through the 1st half and watched him beating the tambourine with such passion and enjoyment during Young Lust, you can tell the guy is loving every bit of this show and putting everything he has into each performance, this is definitely evident when you see video clips of Robbie playing and singing on YouTube and then see video clips of The Big C “on YouTube or example, the difference is like chalk and cheese!

DSCF1825 (Large)

There's a great part during     where there are what sounds like gunshot noise, the lights flash on behind the stage and all 4 backing singers jump back in unison as though they are being shot, this happens 4 or 5 times and its great to see, especially from where i was sitting.

DSCF1815 (Large) DSCF1818 (Large)DSCF1817 (Large)

The much talked about spitting incident at each show!

Roger spitting

At intermission we all  headed back to the O2 lounge for a drink, they had a DJ on playing “pop” music and people dancing on the floor! very odd.

Elzrira drinking beer? It had to be her last show!      Beto, Ralph, Georg, Kevin & Matt at intermission

IMG-20110611-01201  IMG-20110611-01202

O2 lounge

I decided to go sit with Kevin, Ralph, George for the 2nd half, they were all 13th row centre on the floor and i like seeing and hearing it from dead centre, plus i wanted to see Ralphs face during the show as i said earlier i know how serious he is about the music, especially the drumming, being a drummer himself. I had a quick chat with him at intermission and honestly, it was me doing all the chatting as he really was lost for words, he was totally blown away by the show so far!

Hey, You, ITAOT, Nobody Home, Vera, BTBBH all came and went without a hitch. Roger then walked onstage for the 2nd In The Flesh, this really is one of my favourite moments of the show. Kevin and i looked over at Ralph a few times to see how long it took him to notice things, the hotel room coming out of the wall and the Pig during Run Like Hell especially, he didn't even notice the pig till it was right over his head, he was so fascinated and stunned by watching the band onstage he never took his off off them!

My view for the second half                                                                          Spotlight guy on the Hummer

DSCF1828 (Large)  DSCF1835 (Large)  DSCF1842 (Large)

I meant to say in my review of last nights show, when the spotlight comes into the audience and Roger says “there's one in the spotlight , he don't look right to me” the light came straight onto Kevin! Tonight i was hoping id be in with a change but as we were a couple of rows behind where we were last night i missed it, or should i say it missed me There's a great little image (see 3rd picture above) which has taken me a while to capture  where the last Hummer comes around and stops in the middle of the screen, you can see there's a soldier on the top of it with a spotlight and the next minute the screen goes dark and the “fake” spotlight comes out of the stage and shines into the audience.

I was hoping Dave K had relented and got back to his old self after the banter we had been having on facebook earlier in the day and him seeing just how good he looked at the opening of the track but alas he hadn't and his beret stayed on his head not being thrown off by hair flicks!

Run Like Hell

The wall took a while to come down tonight, first three rows, then the next few rows falling backwards and then 15 seconds or so before the rest of the bricks fell forward towards the audience, the latter ones having to be pushed pretty hard by the crew behind!

After the show we hung around outside chatting, talking and hearing (or not due to him being speechless) what Ralph had to say about the show.He was amazed and it still hadn't sunk in and he needed time to think about things before he could comment, am looking forward to seeing him again in Berlin to hear what he has to say.

Ralph, been there, bought the T shirt!    Matt trying his hand at selling posters  Hammers on the way home!

IMG-20110611-01204 IMG-20110611-01205 IMG-20110611-01206

We met a couple of English guys on the way back who we spoke to before the show, hopefully we’ll get to see them again in Berlin. We all made our way back to Hamburg on the train, Elzira, Kevin, Matt, Beto and Ralph went to the bar, i went straight to bed and i heard Kevin coming in the room around 3am!

Another great show last night, looking forward to Herning, Denmark in 2 days time and seeing the extended wall again in the large football stadium which is the venue for my 86th Wall show!

Travelling to Hamburg and show 1…

Kevin and i took the train from Frankfurt around noon and arrived in Hamburg about 4pm. It was cool listening to the Pros and Cons on the headphones whilst on the train and hearing lines like “i see west German skies on the ceiling” and “on the outskirts of some German town”

“West German skies on the ceiling “   “As cars go by i cast my minds eye”  Tea and cake on the train

247110_129358553809475_100002059948211_246517_5653371_n  252541_129479073797423_100002059948211_247310_3939297_n  255694_129494343795896_100002059948211_247379_1719276_n

We had looked for a hotel in Hamburg online yesterday and due to it being a huge holiday weekend in Germany there was very little available and what was available was expensive. Kevin knew a small B&B type place over a bar just by Hamburg station, we called up and booked that just in case we couldn't find anything else when we got there.

When we did arrive I looked after the bags while Kevin went to try find a place to stay, he was back within 5 minutes with a better place than we had booked for a cheaper price, two doors down from the original place.

We checked in, unpacked, freshened up and then took the train out to the venue. Id been here 4 years ago for the Dark Side show, i’ll always remember it as Kevin walked up to the box office window when we arrived and bough 6 front row dead centre tickets an hour before the gig started! however there were seven of us there at that show and as we all sat down there was a spare 7th seat!! Karma worked for us then.

As some of you may know there's been a big outbreak of E coli which is said to have stemmed from Hamburg this past couple of weeks! I don't eat salad at all but its funny seeing the signs in restaurants saying they will serve burgers without salad and even the little sandwich bar on the station platform had a sign warning stating that all their salad was produced in Germany!

No E coli here!

After the short 20 minute train ride and a 15 minute walk from the station to the venue we met up with Berto and Elzira from Brazil, they had flown up from Zurich the day before and tonight was their next to last show before flying home! they had been out here for 4 weeks, seen 20 shows and were a little sad to be going back to Brazil. Dennis and Thomas Dobberham from Germany arrived and we had a chat with them outside before they headed into the venue.

I had 15th row centre for the show tonight, i made my way in early and had a chat with Pat (Lennon) and spent a couple of minutes chatting to Dave K. I wandered around and met up with my good friend Thomas Mueller, we hadn't seen each other since the Dark Side show 4 years ago and was great to see him again and catch up. he had been reading my blog and complemented me on it, as did another guy Guntmar who I'd never met before but had seen a link to my blog on Matt's excellent Brain Damage sight and been reading it even since.

Pat signing some pictures for Thomas and Dennis

Kevin came in later after managing to upgrade his ticket outside to a place next to me. The show has been starting at 8:15 in most of the venues in Europe but both Zurich and tonight were 8pm dead on the button.

Sound was great tonight, not as good as Zurich but it you hadn't been to Zurich you wouldn't know any difference (if that makes sense) and Roger continues to spit on the floor when sat on the lower part of the wall (much to the upset of Kevin).

I have to say that the kids on Another Brick tonight were the worst I've ever seen at any of the shows. They came out and lined up and just stood there and clapped, they looked like they were there because they had to be and didn't look to be enjoying it one bit. i did wonder if the German people are a bit too serious for this type of thing ? The crowd were ok but as Thomas had told me earlier, the German crowds are always quiet (i bet that's not true at the Berlin shows!) Another little thing I've been meaning to mention is to watch Roger and GE for the last minute of Young Lust, they just jam together and move in time with each other really close like Roger used to do with Andy Fairweather Low a lot.

At intermission Elzira and Berto came to sit next to Kevin and i and the empty seats around us, of which there were about 20! George and Sabina also came to sit next to us, they had driven over for the shows and arrived late so i hadn't had chance to see them before the show.

Second half was as good as ever performance wise, i do wish you’d start to move about a bit more again though Dave during Run Like Hell.Said track brought the crowd to their feet for the first time alas it didn't last as they all started to sit down at the beginning of Waiting for the Worms.

This is the Dave K we all want to see again:)

Wall fall wasn't the best tonight with a lot of it falling backwards onto the stage, it still brought a huge cheer from the crowd though.

We all took the train back to Hamburg after the show, i headed to bed and the others headed for the pub!
