Washington DC…

So for tonight’s show we didn't have much travelling to do. Didn't have to be up early, No clothes to pack, no hotel to check out of, kind of made a change seeing a show within a 40 minute drive of “home”.

A few days ago I’d arranged to see the band and have lunch at their hotel today at 2pm. I’d had some custom made calendars done for each of the guys just as a thank you for everything they have done for Kami and i on the tour, Kami had also brought them a little something back each from Tokyo too. I’d done desk calendars for the guys, each one was customised with pictures of the band member and phrases and lyrics from The Wall. Couple of pictures below from Robbie and Dave’s calendar (click the thumbnails for larger size)

We arrived around 2pm and had a fantastic afternoon with the guys, I’ve never met a nicer bunch of people, so down to earth and so genuine. We chatted about all things wall, about Kami, myself, the guys and a few others things too. Jon, Dave, Pat, Marky, Kipp, Robbie and all the other guys have been fantastic with Kami and i at the shows. If we’ve had friends that want to meet them we’ve got in touch and they come out onto the floor and posed for pictures, chatted etc we’ve even become good friends with the guys wife's and partners too, we really cant thank you enough for everything you’ve done for us this past two years and i hope the calendars bring back some great memories of the experiences you’ve had and the people you’ve met.

As it happened the Scorpions were playing DC tonight too! The band were staying at the same hotel and we saw Rudolph Schenker and Matthias Jabs a few times in the lobby. I’ve been a fan of Rudolph and his brother Michael since i was 10 years old and met them both a couple of times. Dave commented on how long ago it was since he had met Rudolph but didn't approach him as he wasn’t sure if he’d remember him.

We spent all afternoon hanging out and after the guys took the bus to the venue Kami and i headed down to the bar where I’d arranged the pre show meet up at 5pm.

Eric and Matt had flown into Dc yesterday, Eric from CA and Matt from the UK. Was great to see them again. A friend whom I’d been e mailing for a couple of weeks too, Alan was already at the bar and it was great to meet face to face and hang out a little. By 6pm the place was packed and friends form everywhere arrived. Zo and Anne from Montreal had driven down the past couple of days, John, Stuart, Ole, Tommy (and his wife Ivanka) all made it, George whom had been sat in front of Kami and i in Chicago made it as did all of Kami’s family, Mark, Beth,Brent, Eric, Al, Eric's friends April and Danny and a few more whom I’m sorry I’ve forgot your names!

We had a great pre show meet up, I’d guess maybe 25 people in total, we chatted, ate, drank and around 7:00pm we all headed out to the venue. Some of us had tickets to pick up at will call and some went straight in.

Myself, Mark, Eric, Kami, Brent and Frank were all next to each other on row 15, middle block. Ole had bought tickets when they went on sale through the pre sale on Rogers site  and it just so happened that his two tickets were right next to ours!  My friend Allan had taken Ole’s spare ticket so we had a total of eight tickets all in a row. Al and Beth were in the first section to the right of the stage. It was Al, Eric and Brent’s first time seeing the show, they had all heard so much about Rogers shows over the years from everyone that i guess now was the time to see what all the talk was about. I managed to meet up with my friend Kimm before the show, she was a friend of Robbie and Victorias and we had been friends for a while on Facebook but never met till tonight.

As I’ve said before, nothing gives me more pleasure than not only watching the crowd during a show but to see the faces of people that have never seen the Wall show or even seen Roger live is great. Brent and Eric were in the latter and it was fantastic to see their faces during the opening of In The Flesh.

There were a couple of lyrical mistakes on Mother tonight—something I’ve never seen before. The band seamed a little off all night to be honest, couple of bum notes here and there and at one point there seemed to be a whole section that seemed flat (music wise) The biggest thing was Rogers vocals “cracking” during “Don’t Leave Me Now”, when i say cracking i mean his whole vocals going and him loosing the ability to sing! he actually bowed his head down and shook it from side to side before looking up and rubbing his throat, i seriously thought that was it! His vocals were shot and the show as over, but nope, he recovered really well and within 15 seconds after dropping the next few words an octave he was back to normal! If this wasn’t proof that he’s really singing then nothing was! I looked to my right at Mark, he looked at me, Kami looked at her dad before looking at me, i looked over to Al, he was looking at me, we were all a little shocked at what we had just heard. I would like to see/hear this again but as of yet it doesn't seem to be on you tube.

I was surprised how loud the crowd were tonight as DC is known for being a bit more relaxed and less enthusiastic than a lit of cities but tonight they were on their feet from the start and didn't once sit down. The rest of the show went without any hitches really.

Quebec wall construction....

As much as I'd love what Roger said to be true and there be an 800 foot wall in Quebec, after seeing the picture below of the ongoing construction, i'm wondering if its actually going to be the "normal" stadium sized wall with the ends done as below ? Similar to what they did in a few football stadiums in Europe last year where they made 50 feet or so of the Wall at the ends out of plywood and then painted it! Guess we'll find out this weekend!

Details of entry points:

North Carolina to Virginia..

After getting to the hotel just north of Raleigh around 3am Kami and i crashed for a few hours and left the next morning at 9am. Kami’s Grandpa and brother had been driving up to DC the day before and actually stayed in Raleigh the same night as us however we didn't meet up with them but they must have been following us no more than 15 minutes as when we arrived home around noon, they arrived 15 minutes later.

It had been Kami’s grandpa’s, (Al) 91st birthday a week before so tonight we were all going out to a nice restaurant in downtown DC that we’d all eaten at a few times before to celebrate his birthday. Mark, Beth, Kami, Myself, Al, Eric (Marks brother), and his two friends who had come up April and Danny “Goose” this was his call sign while in the air force which is where Eric knew him from. My good friend Frank for Tucson had also flown in for the DC show tomorrow and joined us all for dinner.

We had a fantastic meal out and in great company. We all headed back home around 11, Kami and i dropped April and Danny back at their hotel as they were staying only a few miles from the house. Was really great to meet you both and hope to see you again sometime!

Charlotte, North Carolina…

As i said in my last post, my friend Greg was going to tonight's show in Charlotte and lives and works half way between Raleigh and Charlotte so we arrange to pick him up at 2pm and then carry on driving to the venue for tonight's show. We’d bumped into my friend Hassan’s brother Amin last night at the show and chatted for a while at intermission, he later sent me an e mail lrecommending a bakery to go to for breakfast just outside Durham. I googled it and it was on the way to Greg’s place so Kami and i headed over the for breakfast and arrived at 10:30ish.

It was an artsy type place, full of young people drinking coffee and eating cakes while sitting on their laptops.

After breakfast we hit the road to Gregs place and arrived around 1:30

P1080086 (Large) P1080084 (Large) P1080085 (Large)

Greg had a party for Col, his wife and a few friends a couple of weeks ago at his place of work. The whole warehouse was done out like a live music venue! Lasers, smoke machines, couches etc plus a wet bar and a full set up of band instruments and stage! Greg sings in a band part time and him and the band put on a show at the party which by all accounts went down a storm! Kami went to freshen up in the bathroom and came back out to ask Greg if he had a pair of tweezers. Greg’s business is staples and fasteners, the whole warehouse was as you would expect….. a warehouse with racking, stock, forklift truck etc, Greg turned to Kami and with the straightest face just replied “no, but i have a pair of needle nose pliers” kami took these off to the bathroom and returned triumphantly showing me what appeared to be a single hair that the “tweezers” had removed!! (i didn't ask where from!)

The drive to Charlotte was about an hour and a half, traffic was good and the rain held off till we got there. My friend Ron was leaving his school at 4pm and would be there for 6:30 i also had another friend Dianna who would be at the show and she and her friends were taking a limo to the gig and offered us a ride, one we declined though as the bar we were meeting in was a stones throw from the venue.

Greg wanted to try meet Roger and get his wall album signed, i said the best bet would be to wait outside the hotel as he usually always signs things for people that wait. We parked the car at 4pm and the band were leaving their hotel at 4:30 so Greg wandered over to the hotel while Kami and i went up Connolleys, the Irish Bar id arrange to meet friends in.

After having a bite to eat, my friend Ron arrived, was great to finally meet face to face and we chatted for an hour before Kami, Ron and i walking down to the venue. Dianna was stuck in traffic in the limo and i said I’d see her inside. Greg held back to have another couple of beers and Stuart, John and Tommy would also see us inside the venue.

Tonight's venue was another basketball arena, slightly bigger that last nights in Raleigh but even so, the wall looked so short and small compared to what we had been used to seeing in the outdoor stadiums. We hung around on the floor for a while chatting and i pointed a few things out to Ron. He hadn't seen Roger since the 2000 In The Flesh show and i knew he was in for a huge surprise compared to how small scale shows those were. The three of us were 13th row centre on the aisle, John and Stuart were front row in front of Dave and Tommy and Greg were the left block a few rows back.

I saw my friend Dianna for 5 minutes before the show started, we hadn’t seen each other since she came to the Dark Side shows in VA in 2006, she and her friends were 3rd row dead centre and were also in for a shock as she hadn’t seen the wall in 2010 so this was her first time. We also bumped into Angelique, the girl dressed as Vera Lynn, had a nice chat with her. She also came over at intermission and pointed out that her boyfriend had spotted Rogers face “in” the wall !! A friend has also just yesterday sent me another picture with what appear to be more faces, see below and make your own mind up.

Anyway, make your own minds up as to what you see!

The shows itself was great, i got a lot of fun watching Ron’s face as he was stood next to us, the gig was loud but not as loud as last night in Raleigh.

After the show Kami, Greg, Ron and i headed back to the bar for a quick drink before saying goodbye to Ron and the three of us starting the drive back to DC. We dropped Greg off around 1am and Kami and i arrived at our hotel just outside Raleigh around 2:45am.
